In Absentia
We would send a handful of Earth to every star
until only empty space remained.
We are that generous.
We are that eager
to redistribute what we found
into a new disposition
that can be traced back to us.
Like vandals, we want to autograph
what we didn't make.
Like gods, we want to erase ourselves
from the historical record
so that we can sit, anonymous,
and watch how everything changes
to accommodate our absence.
