I Wanted You

I wanted you to be the one
born to love the thing that I am.

Of course you weren't.

In progress is another way
of saying incomplete.

How can we be expected to commit
to something that isn't finished
and, therefore, can't be fully known?

And still you tried so hard to love me.

To say in your way or as best you could
would be patronizing.

The shock of realizing that what you love
is not what you need.

The consolation of walking, or running, away.
