I Said At The Beginning

There is no longer room,
by which I mean time,
for the unanticipated good thing
to happen, for the pleasant
and pleasing surprise.
The angle of the future is downward.
Determined from the start
not to miss everything worthwhile,
I missed it.
Can I blame fate?
The worst at the end,
I said at the beginning,
and here we are.
How, how did it get so late?
