I Have Worked So Hard
Because life is speed embodied.
Or evidence of intelligence.
Because I have worked so hard at being idle.
Or clever rather than smart.
Because an heroic enterprise.
Or definitive refutation.
Because my father was a feather on the scale.
Or constantly unearthing artifacts of my identity.
Because my friends, as far as stars, burn too dim to be seen.
Or their desolate imaginative landscapes.
Because every moment contains a birth and at least one death.
Or long enough to be, too brief to matter.
Because every life finds another way to fail.
Or the uninspired squirming in the shallows.
Because this must mean something to someone!
Or obsessed with our most recent mistake.
Because I am encouraged but not permitted to express my gratitude.
Or an aptitude for solitude.
Because I can only control my reaction to you, not your reaction to me.
Or failure to achieve our desired outcome.
