Genetic Palimpsest

There is a bird in my yard
that was once a poet.
He remembers nothing of that,
and yet he shrieks his inborn song
modified by a few life experiences.
There is also a squirrel
that used to sail on a pirate ship
and still likes to peer out from the top
of the pine and the sycamore
and scout in all directions,
watching for targets of opportunity.
And once I saw a 'possum
which I'm pretty sure once saved his people
from a terrible fate which he no longer remembers
and which they, too, have long forgotten.
It may be time to dig up the nightcrawlers
and interrogate them to discover
what they did before that has the poet
so determined to unearth and consume them.
