...and, in general, the parts are often joined so haphazardly
that they might as well belong to other poems.
—Eugene Ostashevsky
nonsense should be fun; serious nonsense should be avoided at all costs; how I react,
confronted with the praise of my detractors and the condemnation of my acolytes; vulnerary
espiocrats; discourage the cure; if iffy because if-then, then...; shift it to the stew; the
insubsequential; possession vs ownership of a copy;
for it is better to marry than to burn; in the
sense that a dissimilarity is not a difference; some of me wants some of you; approval is a kind
of recognition; the praised upraised; the differently-anatomied; the oppression of the unknown
on the almost-undesired; a misrepresentation of sincerity; into the overlapping shadows of sex;
hypothesizing residual continuity; I hold people accountable for their excessive or inappropriate
reactions to unremarkable stimuli; I should walk up to strangers and ask them what they love,
what has hurt them the most: maybe then they would be real to me; I tend to reject
inadequate, to resist embrace of less-than-ideal; to sentence the guilty to shame while freeing
the well-behaved from blame; the intellectual equivalent of the ubiquitous American stripmall;
alienation from attention; pleading for responsibility; colonizing is procreating writ large;
whether it is worse to be forgotten or unknown, never known; don't let them fool you—the
ennui of too much sex is much better than the angst of too little; there’s nothing more cynical
than power; inexperience is not purity; sharing fear; women, their frescoed facades perfecting
deception; pop-up bodice; the distance between conquering and defeating; satisfaction without
accomplishment; seeking liberation through libation; the look on your face when you realize
your stories don't get any traction with me; each of us executed for having failed some
unrevealed expectations; there is no “first star,” only the first star you see (tonight); a hilarious
lust for humor; not knowing goldfinch from bullfinch; persistence is the best plan; the truest
trust; voyeur poetry; not cold not old not tied; the subset of the applicable; to those not
susceptible to direct address; handicapped with lustlove; a lie, I mean to say a simple narrative;
our bumper car relations; see how you like it; arm around; lives spent attributing motive to
happenstance; follow your nose, tricks are for kids, they're grrreat!; confrontations of comfort;
matters too important to leave to chance or for later; few can object to love's abduction; that
which you turn your back on may more easily sneak up on you; lounging or lunging at lovely
bodies; person, place, and thing; subverting inspiration imagination consolation; offended
by the posture of worship; ubiquitous barriers against closeness, sharing; using always
tú and
never
usted, as a political statement, always
tú and never
vous; "cleaving the luminous stammer
of bodies"; the muteness of the mattress; the mundane masculine, the ephemeral feminine, the
mix and match; union between remain and go; consistence and persistency; everything that
people managed to do while I was alive but asleep; celebrate and grieve, grieve and celebrate,
what we gain and lose in dream; free to undertake adventures that require freedom, and focus;
to create when there is not enough, a lack; to create when there's an overabundance, a glut;
dyscalculia; unintelligible, incomprehensible; superlatives reserved for superheroines; I am still
searching for just the right mix of refinement and crudeness; a non-specific pacifism; I have
tried every shape & posture, save a few to which I'm not inclined; imperfect innocence,
intolerable complicity; those who conflate the intimate with the sexual; imagine an
uncollaborative world; all mocking is also self-mocking; humility is humiliating; a poem should
be more than an orgasm, but never less; the carnal arts; juvenescence; the world was supposed
to supply the drive; some assume, some assure; the first blossom to bloom lasts no longer than
any other; eager to burn, they welcome conflagration; the mystery that I identify with (as)
obscures so many other mysteries; long enough for a victim to love the perpetrator; the
disappointment when the formerly-silent speak; the unlooked-for thing, the undreamt-of
incident; comparative compassion; like the intensity of intimacy: preferred but not necessary;
for what love is cover for; the only discipline is self-discipline; nature is built on renewal, not on
invention; in this way only do we stand apart from nature; I love more unloved, so maybe that's
why; to sleep with ghosts, luscious and anonymous; the next moment, the right moment; blink
and you miss it; insofar as your theories and models could account for it; fingernail moon; I
routinely spurn imposed routines; like a tattered old raincoat after two years without rain; until
we undertake to do publicly what hitherto had hidden in our hearts; the lover-gods of
tomorrow; a delightful awkwardness expressing uncertainty; those who cling to the idea of
letting go; desire is the great motivator; that which may accompany accomplishment; the race
to love something before you die; to see like an artist and hear like a musician; the movement
from tiger lilies to spider lilies; here we are again, fleeing the fleeting; what a fuss we make
about one death when everything is always dying; naming severs one thing from another; the
best thing I've ever felt has been delight; there are worse things than being a ghost, the one
who doesn't matter among so many who do; a solution that satisfies no one is the solution most
likely to be chosen; unable to shake the suspicion that a complicated emotional life is a
confused emotional life; the exotic is erotic; only a fool denies it; the muse of association; an
unidentifiable melody on an intermittent breeze; sometimes it is reasonable to do the
unreasonable thing; there are reasons; you may not need them; the consensual is allegorical—
relax, I speak of reality, not sexuality; the impotent gods of desperate imagination; my greatest
misfortune was not to meet people like me; every hello means another goodbye; they are tired
of my nonsense; everyone you meet writes a line in your poem; few will read any of the rest of
it; I thank them for their fellowship, brief and at a considerable remove as it was, and move on
alone
