Ashes am I of all that once I seemed.
—Edna St. Vincent Millay, from "The Suicide"

You name it, it's the illustration of an illusion,
they say.  I say.  It has been said, is said.

What rational idea is ever
as violently-defended as the irrational one?

The world is always opening:
even its closings are opening.

In this—and only in this—
is where we diverge from the world.

My enthusiasm has waned
as the rewards have dwindled.

What would I obtain
were I willing to relinquish what I possess?

Whatever knowledge is, it is not an answer.
Whatever wisdom is, it is not a comfort.
