Do You Believe Me?

"I'm not a fictional character," I said.
Do you believe me?
Do you believe that I said it?
Do you believe that I'm not?
If I wrote it but didn't say it,
doesn't that negate the claim?
What if life is just fiction
written more slowly
and harder to read?
As I write this, I don't know
who "you" are.
You are the one reading this,
but I don't know who will read this.
And you don't know if there
was ever really an M. C. Rush.
There's so much we don't know.
Fiction is constrained and unconstrained
in ways different than life.
And poetry is another thing entirely.
"I am a fictional character," I said.
Do you believe me?
Who are you believing or disbelieving?
