De Rerum Natura

They say a propensity for superstition,
for religion, is built into the brain,
but I say not. I say what's
there's a need for explanation
and that's what drives us forward,
sometimes into false pursuit.
When we wander, we want to know,
and though this hunger can sometimes
be relieved somewhat by settling for belief,
the world is there, always, to remind us
that it doesn't care about the stories
we make up and tell each other, tell ourselves,
that there are facts waiting to be discovered
that reflect structure and operation
and describe the nature of things.
