Confinement

we're all neighbors
all strangers

adjacent incompatible

so much alike we can't
tolerate looking at one another

incendiary expectations

magnifying tiny variations
into hatred

to shush and shame

desperate to leverage what we have
into what we want—

we can't, we can't, we can't!

your inhabiting your space
confines me to mine

the opalescent illusion

maybe it's all so we can learn
empathy through regret

how proud we can be of our regret!

everyone antagonizes the protagonist—
why can't there just be one of us?

or

why must we be so nearly
similar enough to merge?

malevolence is the easy way out
