Christmas Commentary on Extraterrestrial Life

(Hold still! As the wintery frost runs for home.)

The fire is out, as precautions demand,
The hollow is glistening, with snow's wintery brand.

But from a far corner, I heard a great crash,
And out on the icefield, I was with a flash!

The night sounds all stilled, not a cloud in the sky,
I looked between the fur trees, to the earthcrest up high.

With nary a shiver, yet many a chill,
I started myself, up that towering hill.

And what did my eyes, all aglow, do behold,
But a scene from last month's Analog centerfold!

A Martian in green, a Centauran in blue,
With me standing there wondering what I should do.

I saw aliens with feathers, others with hair,
And others whose looks said that you should beware.

Suddenly, at once, in that alien scene,
I picked out, with wonder, a familiar being.

Wearing red suit and large sack, as only one does,
I was quite sure, just who it was.

Through the plantmen and blobs, I did make my way,
To give jolly old Santa, a well-deserved "Hey."

But alas when I started, to move myself forth,
I found myself quickly, on the cold, snowy earth.

Outside of my doorway, and under a tree,
Was where upon looking, I found myself to be.

As I went back inside, and climbed into bed,
Dozens of questions ran through my head.

Was it a dream, that party that night?
Or was I found out, and returned to my plight?
