Celestial Surveillance

Imagine trillions of stars all staring down on us in judgment.
Billions for every one of our billions, watching, frowning
(in whatever manner stars might frown), trillions
weighing each of us every time we act, or decline to act,
knowing, condemning. The fierce glare.

Then imagine infinite stars blighting the black, balls of gas
striving to burn out, eventually succeeding, without ever seeing
us, unable to care about caring. What a relief! What freedom!
To pan out or peter out on our own on this drift of dirt,
insulated from insult by inattention. To move toward oblivion
unknown.
