Banal, Brutal

people

who never feel safe enough to indulge emotion—
or never emote enough to feel safe

who confront honesty with rebuttal,
with retort

who hear only the music of the spears,
the lying lyric of fear

public pulses

dedicated to delights
motivated by frights
attracted to lights

worshipping axioms of adaptation,
sensitive to rebuke
but not to the similarity between fear and euphoria

to each his owner,
terrorized by awe,
the imposition of adulation

all forsaken by all

with or without consent,
with or without intent,
before or after we fall

into unrecovered subterranean chambers
carefully prepared long ago
yet waiting

banal brutality
brutal banality
harrowing hype

bigotry ubiquitous

in god is lust
for dust-covered erotic ivory icons
in keeping with exotic evangelism

congenital mysteries, inherently secret...
what is lost, what is missed
is subtlety

strategic zombification,
a revelation of insecurity
big enough for a microcosm
