Autobiography

                           — to the teachers and librarians
                               who said yes, read,
                               don't wait for the others

To the extent that I do
what I choose to,
not what I'm compelled to,
I'm me.

Those sympathetic tones
used to cancel undesirable sounds—
I try to find the kind
that can oppose lies.

Every word a password—
how determined we are to pass!
playing opossum with possibility,
possibly.

Death
is more important to life
than life,
but not to me.

This is the year I noticed hydrangeas.
Though why you should care
I can't imagine.
Unless this is the year you noticed me?

He lived after a long stillness
           in a hometown he left
as soon as he was able to glimpse wonders
and race toward an unsatisfactory end.
