All There Was

To be everything, you must become nothing.
But an infinity of nothings is only nothing.
You are too small, will always be too small,
for infinity. And too large to become nothing.
And yet—  (What is wiser than "and yet"?)
Be as large as you can be;
be as small as you must be.
Be until you can't, then don't.
To be is everything; to not be, nothing.
Duration is an unkindness, an impertinence
that takes our measure and reports it to no one,
certainly not to us.
Flare up, fade out, and know
you have done all there was to do.
