A Whole Life

A whole life
spent watching the blue horizon.
Finally, a ship!
It passes,
passes and is gone.
Or, finally, no ship!
No ship,
and you can watch for one no more.
The waves, the birds, the clouds
continue on as if you were never there,
had never watched,
had never seen or not seen.
But it's all an illusion:
every wave different,
every bird different,
every cloud different.
You saw or didn't see,
had or didn't have,
were or were not,
but the only true thing
was the sun that shone then
and the sun that shines now.
